Port of Virginia crane moving containers
The I-564 Intermodal Connector will have four lanes with a grass median and will include new bridges and overpasses, exit and entrance ramps, storm water management areas, and other related infrastructure. It will provide separate traffic queues for vehicles entering Naval Station Norfolk (NSN) and Norfolk International Terminals (NIT). Finally, the connector’s terminus will provide access to Second Street within NSN, including the replacement of NSN Gate 6, access to the northern side of NIT, and eastbound re-entry to I-564 from both access points.

Major Project Benefits

The I-564 Intermodal Connector will provide a host of benefits to the Hampton Roads region.
  • The extension of I-564 will help streamline the region’s transportation network, resulting in direct freight access and increased cargo efficiencies at NIT and the Ports of Virginia, a primary base of economic activity in Virginia.
  • Significant relief from the highly trafficked Hampton Boulevard which currently serves NIT, coupled with more fluid and direct commuter access to NSN, will help improve safety and security for a region known for its vital military presence.
